Why We Need a Ride Mechanic Appreciation Day

Most people in the amusement industry know that June 30th is recognized as National Ride Operator Appreciation Day. As someone who has worked as a ride operator, I think that’s a wonderful thing. Ride operators play an important role in creating safe, fun, and memorable experiences for guests every day.

But recently, I started thinking about something.

What if June 29th became Ride Mechanic Appreciation Day?

Before a ride operator can welcome the first guest of the day, before the first train leaves the station, and before the gates even open, there is an entire team working behind the scenes to make sure everything is operating safely. That team is our ride mechanics.

Ride mechanics are often some of the hardest-working and least-recognized people in the amusement industry. They work early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, and sometimes in less-than-ideal weather conditions. When everyone else is heading home, maintenance teams are often still troubleshooting problems, performing inspections, and preparing rides for the next operating day.

Most guests never see the work they do.

Many operators don’t even realize the full extent of what mechanics handle every single day. Yet without them, rides wouldn’t open, attractions wouldn’t operate, and the safety systems we rely on wouldn’t be there.

That’s why I think ride mechanics deserve a day of recognition too.

Of course, the reality is that ride mechanics deserve appreciation every day, not just once a year. The same can be said for ride operators and many other departments throughout the park. But if we have a day dedicated to recognizing ride operators, why not also set aside a day to recognize the men and women who keep the rides running safely behind the scenes?

Imagine June 29th becoming Ride Mechanic Appreciation Day—a day where operators, supervisors, managers, and even guests could take a moment to thank the maintenance teams for everything they do.

A simple thank you may not seem like much, but it can mean a lot to someone whose work often goes unnoticed.

So what do you think?

Should June 29th become Ride Mechanic Appreciation Day?

Because every dispatch, every lift hill climb, every launch, and every safe ride experience starts with the hard work and dedication of a ride mechanic.
