Ranking the Coasters I Rode at Worlds of Fun

My latest trip to Worlds of Fun was a success! Not only did I add a new coaster credit to my list, but I also got to experience some of the park’s best rides. Here’s how I’d rank the five coasters I rode during the trip. 1. Prowler ⭐ Without a doubt, Prowler takes the top spot. This wooden coaster is packed with speed, twists, and an incredible amount of fun. It delivers an exciting ride from start to finish and proves that a great wooden coaster can easily compete with steel. If you’re visiting Worlds of Fun, this one is an absolute must-ride. 2. Mamba Mamba may not deliver the same legendary airtime it once did thanks to the trims, but it’s still an intense hyper coaster. The first drop is fantastic, the speed is impressive, and it’s still one of the signature rides in the park. Even with less airtime than in years past, it’s easy to see why so many coaster fans love it. 3. Patriot As a fan of B&M inverted coasters, Patriot didn’t disappoint. It’s smooth, comfortable, and de...

Why We Need a Ride Mechanic Appreciation Day

Most people in the amusement industry know that June 30th is recognized as National Ride Operator Appreciation Day. As someone who has worked as a ride operator, I think that’s a wonderful thing. Ride operators play an important role in creating safe, fun, and memorable experiences for guests every day. But recently, I started thinking about something. What if June 29th became Ride Mechanic Appreciation Day? Before a ride operator can welcome the first guest of the day, before the first train leaves the station, and before the gates even open, there is an entire team working behind the scenes to make sure everything is operating safely. That team is our ride mechanics. Ride mechanics are often some of the hardest-working and least-recognized people in the amusement industry. They work early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, and sometimes in less-than-ideal weather conditions. When everyone else is heading home, maintenance teams are often still troubleshooting problems, perfor...

Making Theme Park Days Easier: Using Rider Swap at Silver Dollar City

One of the best things about Silver Dollar City is that it's a park the whole family can enjoy together. But if you're visiting with little ones who aren't tall enough for some of the bigger attractions, you might wonder how parents can still experience the thrill rides without waiting through the same line twice. That's where Rider Swap comes in. As a ride operator, one of the most common misunderstandings I see is how Rider Swap actually works. Many guests assume they can send one parent to ride while the other takes the child somewhere else in the park and come back later. However, Rider Swap requires both parties to be present at the attraction. Here's how it works: Parent A enters the queue and rides while Parent B stays with the child. When Parent A exits the ride, Parent B should already be waiting nearby and ready to swap places. The exchange happens at that time, allowing Parent B to ride without having to wait through the full queue. The key is that the s...

Working Thunderation in Its Final Season

There are some rides that are attractions, and then there are rides that become part of a park's identity. For more than three decades, Thunderation has been one of those rides. After opening in 1993, carrying more than 27 million riders through the Ozark Mountains, and becoming a rite of passage for countless guests, Thunderation is taking its final ride at the end of the 2026 season. For guests, this season is a chance to say goodbye. For those of us working the ride, it's something even more personal. Every day, I watch people walk through the queue with stories. Some rode Thunderation when they were kids and are now bringing their own children. Others remember it being their first roller coaster. Some guests come off the train laughing, while others step onto the platform nervous but determined to conquer a fear they've carried for years. This season feels different because every ride could be someone's last. As ride operators, we're used to the routine. Check ...

More Than Just Pushing Buttons: Life as a Ride Operator at Silver Dollar City

When people visit Silver Dollar City, they see thrilling roller coasters, family attractions, delicious food, and unforgettable memories. What many guests don't see is the team behind the scenes working hard to make those experiences possible every single day. As a ride operator at Silver Dollar City, my job is often much more than simply pressing buttons and checking restraints. Every day is an opportunity to create moments that guests will remember long after they leave the park. One of the most rewarding parts of the job is seeing the excitement on people's faces. Whether it's a child conquering their first roller coaster, a family riding together for the first time, or a thrill-seeker returning for their tenth ride of the day, it's special to be part of those memories. Working attractions also comes with a great deal of responsibility. Safety is always the top priority. Every restraint checked, every dispatch made, and every procedure followed helps ensure that tho...
